Study in Germany After 12th

Indian students who complete Class 12 can pursue undergraduate study in Germany, but university entrance eligibility must be checked carefully. Germany does not treat every foreign Class 12 certificate as automatically equivalent to the German Abitur. From admissions beginning with Winter Semester 2026/27, APS India states that updated criteria apply to Indian Class XII qualifications, including a minimum overall score of 70% of the maximum achievable marks for the standard Studienkolleg and one-academic-year pathways. 

Under the updated APS guidance, Class XII with at least 70% plus an APS certificate may qualify a student for subject-restricted admission through Studienkolleg. Class XII with at least 70%, APS and one successfully completed academic year in a recognised Bachelor’s programme may support direct subject-restricted admission to the previous field of study and closely related subjects. Other routes can apply in specific cases, including applicants with recognised qualifications or eligible JEE results. Final admission is always decided by the German higher-education institution.

What Are TU9 Universities?

TU9 is the alliance of nine leading Universities of Technology in Germany: RWTH Aachen University, Technische Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Braunschweig, Technical University of Darmstadt, TUD Dresden University of Technology, Leibniz University Hannover, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Technical University of Munich and University of Stuttgart. However, TU9 membership does not automatically make every programme the best fit for every student. Choosing the Right German University

The best institution depends on your academic background, preferred specialisation, German or English language ability, budget, admission pathway and career goals. A research university may be ideal for a student planning a PhD, while a University of Applied Sciences may be better for someone who wants smaller classes, practical projects and closer industry integration.

Work While Studying

International students from non-EU/EEA countries with a residence permit for study purposes can generally work up to 140 full days or 280 half-days per year without approval from the Federal Employment Agency. Current official guidance also allows an alternative working-student approach of up to 20 hours per week under the applicable rules. A working day of up to four hours counts as a half-day for the annual day calculation. 

Typical student jobs include research assistant roles, working-student positions in companies, software or engineering support, hospitality, retail, logistics and university jobs. Compulsory internships that are part of the degree may be treated differently from voluntary work for the annual employment quota, so students should confirm the rules for their specific residence status and internship. 

Post-Study Work Opportunities

After successfully completing a German university degree, eligible graduates from third countries can apply for a residence permit for up to 18 months to look for qualified employment. During this job-search period, graduates may take up employment while searching for a role that matches their qualifications. Once suitable skilled employment is secured, the graduate can move to the appropriate residence route, such as a skilled-worker residence permit or an EU Blue Card when the conditions are met. 

Germany’s post-study pathway is valuable, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed job outcome. Hiring depends on degree relevance, German-language ability, technical skills, internship or working-student experience, location, salary and employer demand.

Tuition Fees in Germany

Germany is known for comparatively low tuition at many public universities. In general, most state universities do not charge a general tuition fee for standard Bachelor’s and consecutive Master’s programmes, but students still pay a semester contribution. Important exceptions exist: non-EU students at state universities in Baden-Württemberg generally pay €1,500 per semester unless an exemption applies, and some Bavarian universities can charge tuition to non-EU students. TUM, for example, charges programme-specific tuition for many newly enrolling non-EU students. 

Private universities and non-consecutive or executive Master’s programmes can charge substantial tuition. Students should therefore never assume that “Germany is free” without checking the exact programme fee page.

Cost of Living in Germany

Living costs vary significantly between cities. Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg and parts of Berlin can be expensive, especially for accommodation, while cities such as Dresden, Leipzig, Magdeburg, Chemnitz and some university towns may be more manageable. The official blocked-account amount is a visa funding minimum, not a guarantee that every student can live comfortably on exactly that amount in every city.
