A lower-ranked programme with strong funding and direct career alignment can be a better choice than a famous university that creates unsustainable debt.
F-1 students may be eligible for on-campus employment. Study in the States states that active F-1 students generally may not work more than 20 hours per week in on-campus employment while school is in session. More hours may be possible during official breaks when the student remains eligible, but students should always confirm their situation with the school’s Designated School Official (DSO).
Off-campus work is not automatically permitted. Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT) and other forms of authorised employment have separate eligibility and approval requirements. The primary post-study practical-training route for many F-1 students is Optional Practical Training. Students who complete an eligible STEM degree and meet the applicable requirements may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension after the initial post-completion OPT period. Longer-term employment can involve a different immigration category such as H-1B, but eligibility and selection are separate from OPT and are never guaranteed by a U.S. degree.
